The use of an endogenous energy resource, of a "natural" character, that does not contaminate and with the capacity to reduce the electrical energy consumption in the industry, lead the management team of Artes Gráficas del Atlántico, S. A. to begin an innovative journey in the industrial environment of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands.

Given the wind potential existing in the environment where the industry develops its activity, in December 1997 the project for the construction of a wind farm of 450 kW power began in the facilities of Artes Gráficas del Atlántico, in the Industrial Area of Arinaga, in the municipality of Agüimes.

After many comparative analyses, the ACSA - V27/225 model was chosen based on the optimal relation between efficiency and suitability of the wind characteristics present in the area.

Installation took place of two turbines of 31.5m in height, equipped with three-bladed rotors with an aerodynamic design (facing windward) and of 27m in diameter that cover an area of 573m2, developing a unit rated power of 225 kW, even when the maximum power reached is of 229 kW. The rotor blades, with a span of 13m in length and a weight of 600 Kg each, avail of a variable movement system, that is to say, they are capable of presenting the optimal surface and profile for the prevailing wind (at low speeds, the blade is angled in order to present a large surface towards the wind and, when the speed increases, this surface is reduced by changing the direction angle); for safety the vanes turn at a constant speed of 32/43 rpm (both the rotation speed and the twisting) controlled by a microprocessor, and are constructed on a central casting "hub" protected by a fiberglass cover (spinner), covered again by polyester resin strengthened with fiberglass.

 

With the objective of achieving the maximum potential of the wind energy, the wind turbines can move with breezes of up to 3.5m/s, automatically facing the wind by a geared motor that turns the nacelle, controlled by a wind vane; when the wind speed exceeds 25.0m/s the wind turbines automatically stops and blocks the vanes.

The set formed by the nacelle and the rotor weigh a total of 10,800 Kg, and are elevated to 31 meters of height by a hollow conical steel tower anchored to a base of reinforced concrete.

The two turbines described, under the current regulations applicable to electrical energy production for cogeneration facilities obtained through renewable resources (R. D. 2366/1994), were located on a plot belonging to the company next to the facilities in order to achieve a supply for the industry and return to the grid of excess production that is not consumed.

The initial success achieved with the two wind turbines lead to, in the year 2002, Artes Gráficas del Atlántico, S. A. deciding to install two new units of 225 kW of the same model, therefore the power generated by the wind farm went from 450 kW to 900 kW in this extension.

Artes Gráficas del Atlántico, S. A. always understood that the cogeneration of energy from productive systems that do not contaminate represents a clear alternative to the traditional systems in agreement with the commitments acquired for the development and implementation of the Environmental Management system in the company.

Due to its pioneer and ecological nature, this forward-looking decision has converted Artes Gráficas del Atlántico, S. A. into an industrial reference within the Community of the Canary Islands and the state, which has proven the feasibility of the use of clean, renewable and non-aggressive energies in the environment associated with the production process.
